Care at the Chemist

The Care at the Chemist minor ailment scheme is available to all patients registered with any GP practice in NHS Southport and Formby CCG and NHS South Sefton CCG.

For some common minor ailments patients can attend their local pharmacy for a consultation with the community pharmacist. If the pharmacist assesses the patient would benefit from treatment, a medicine can be supplied appropriate to the ailment. If a patient is eligible for free prescriptions there is no charge to receiving items under Care at the Chemist.

The scheme is intended to improve access to treatment for patients suffering from minor ailments without the need to see their GP; it is not intended to treat any long term conditions.

Supply is made at the pharmacist’s discretion and there may be occasions where the patient is referred to their GP or is offered other advice. In order to support appropriate treatment through the service, the number of times a particular medication can be supplied to a patient in a month or year is limited.
